Moss Castle

906 Sylvanie

The Preston Moss family moved to St. Joseph in the late 1850 when St. Joseph was the economic center of the United States. By the 1870’s Preston’s son, Josiah Beattie Moss had made a fortune in lumber and real estate. In 1890 he hired the *rm of Eckel and Mann to construct this Chateauesque style home. The construction of the house was overseen by Eckel and Mann employee and eventually nationally renowned architect, Harvey Ellis and is considered one of the best examples of his vision and whimsical styling. Moss married Mary Wood Leach in 1891, and they lived with their children in the house until 1930 when it was sold to The Knight of Columbus. For many years the Moss Castle was home to Barbosa’s Castillo Restaurant, which is to this day, one of the most popular restaurants in Saint Joseph at another location.
