The Nunning House
1401 Jules
The Nunning House at 1401 Jules, is a brick, 17 room, Queen Anne style home completed in 1887 by August Nunning. August was the son of Henry Nunning, who opened the second brewery in St, Joseph.
Unique features of the home include its octagonal sided, three-story tower, Terra Cotta insets in the third story window pediments, unique wood trim in many of the downstairs, formal rooms, seven fire places, and 32 stained glass windows. One of those windows, positioned on the front stairs landing is over 10 feet tall and has a Romeo and Juliet theme in honor of August’s wife, Mary Blair, who died shortly after they were married in 1878 and before the home built.
Another unique feature of the home, now closed to the public, is a tunnel that is approximately 30 feet below the basement floor and runs some 80 feet from under the house to the north. This tunnel was originally a lager cooling facility for the Nunning brewery that sat directly behind the home facing Faraon Street.
