W.P. Jones House

1024 Felix

Perched high on its lot overlooking Civic Center Park, this imposing structure was built in 1883 for William Pinckney Jones.  Jones eventually formed Jones, Townsend and Shireman one of the largest clothing businesses amassing upwards of $100 000 per year by 1884, which is equivalent to approximately $3,200,000 today.   Mister Jones’ partner, Robert E. Townsend, became the second owner of the home and lived here until his death at 80 in 1933.

The home features numerous beveled and leaded glass windows, an Anglo-Japanese motif, arched glass windows and original woodwork.  The neoclassical porch with fluted columns was a later addition.

Turn left and cross 11th street to find the Kennard-Chase Mansion on the southeast corner of 11th and Felix.
