Wyeth Tootle Mansion

1100 Charles

In 1879, William and Eliza Wyeth, the founder of Wyeth Hardware and Manufacturing, hired architect E.J. Eckel to design a mansion resembling the castles they had seen on the Rhine River as they were traveling Germany. This Gothic style mansion, with Italianate in'uences, is a prime example of early homes of prominent St. Joseph residents. With three doors, a tower, and more than 40 rooms, it stands today as one of the best examples of St. Joseph’s late 19th century wealth and opulence. It features stunning woodworks, hand-painted ceilings, and imported stained glass. Over one million bricks were used in its construction. The front of the building is covered in native sandstone.

The Wyeths lived in their castle home for less than 10 years, when they sold it to Kate Tootle. Kate was the recent widow of Milton Tootle, who at his death had the largest fortune of any person in St. Joseph. Kate hired the New York 3rm of Pottier and Stymus to redecorate the interior of the home.

The mansion is available for rental through the year and open for tours in the spring and summer months.
